Audi Sport Wants a Hypercar

Audi Sport Wants a Hypercar

Audi Sport CEO Stephan Winkelmann would like to get in on the hypercar scene, but not quite yet. He told Automotive News that Audi Sport has to expand its product lineup with more RS crossovers and electric cars before it can start thinking about a new halo car.

"I'm very keen on working on this in the future," Winkelmann said, when asked about a low-volume mid-engine hypercar. "I think not only the brand deserves it, but there is a demand outside, and the [customers] are looking into it."

This car would slot above the R8 (pictured above) and it'd be a halo model for all of Audi, not just Audi Sport. Because of this, Winkelmann says he and his team would be under a lot of pressure to get it right, but he also says a halo model like this is a necessity.

"If you want to build up," Winkelmann told Automotive News, "you have to have always something on top."

In the meantime, look for new crossovers from Audi Sport. Currently it only offers one, the non-US-market RS Q3, but an RS Q5 and RS Q8 are on their way. Automotive News reports that new versions of the RS4 and the RS6—which will be based on the next-gen A6—are in the pipeline too.

Then in 2020/2021, Audi Sport should reveal its versions of Audi's new e-Tron electric cars. Winkelmann says it'll do a "coupe-ish sedan" and/or a "coupe-ish SUV" that offer a balance of EV range and performance.

Given that, we won't see an Audi Sport hypercar at least until 2022, if not later. In the meantime, the R8 will have to suffice.
