It’s easy to get caught up by the IMx’s use as a fully autonomous vehicle, but what really matters about this concept is it serves as the basis for a much-anticipated Nissan EV crossover, something Leaf-heads have been awaiting for years. Also, it depends if Nissan can pull off that 600-kilometre range.
Always difficult to speculate when it comes to concept vehicles, but judging from Nissan officials here at the Tokyo Motor Show, there will be a production version of this IMx crossover sooner rather than later. Given the Japanese automaker’s stated commitment to EV’s, it could be a 2020 model.
If Nissan can live up to the promised 600-km range and package it in an all-wheel drive crossover body, definitely yes. Further, if they can deliver on the specs of the IMx’s two electric motors — 320 kW of power and 700 Nm of torque combined — this will definitely not be a slow CUV.
